Reduce Car Pollution by Driving Less

No one really wants to admit it, but the truth is that the best way to reduce car pollution is to find ways to drive less. Cars are the by far the largest producers of carbon dioxide in the United States. Almost 1/3 of carbon emissions are a result of what, how, and how often we drive. No one is asking you to give up your car entirely, just consider the following ways that you could reduce the amount that you drive:

Telecommute
More and more people are are telecommuting more than ever before. Besides reducing your carbon footprint, people who are able to telecommute from home are often happier and more productive than those who work in the office every day. Find out from your boss if telecommuting is an option for even one day per week and reduce your commute by 20 percent.

Shop Online
In today's information age, there is more and more that people can do with the click of a mouse button from the comfort of their own home than ever before. But what does this have to do with car pollution and my carbon footprint? By shopping online, you create far fewer carbon emissions by having items delivered directly to your door rather than making a trip to the mall or the grocery store yourself. While there may be some extra cost for shipping, you'll save money on gas as well as the time it takes to drive and shop yourself.

Combine Driving Trips
If you must drive, reduce your carbon footprint by combining trips out. Rather than go out every time you need something, wait until you have at least two trips that you can combine. If you drive to work, think about if you can run any of your errands on the way to or from work.

Live Closer to Work
While this isn't possible for everyone, if you are moving or currently renting, consider moving closer to where you work. Or, think about moving closer to a public transportation center to cut your commute. By living closer to work, you save time by driving less. By taking public transit, you can reclaim the time it takes to commute by bringing a book - some public transit options even have wireless internet on board.
