Reduce Car Emissions by Reducing Your Commute

One of the best ways to reduce your car emissions is to reduce your commute. Since cars create almost 1/3 of greenhouse gases in the United States and since much of the that driving is done to and from work, shrinking your commute is a great way to shrink your carbon footprint. Check out the following ways you can reduce your greenhouse gases by reducing your commute.

Telecommute
The most effective way to reduce your commute is to eliminate your commute entirely. More and more companies are allowing their employees to work from home. As a result, employees who are able to work from home are often happier and more productive. Ask about it at work.

Live Closer to Work
While this isn't possible for everyone, if you are moving or currently renting, consider moving closer to where you work. You will not only reduce your commute, but reduce your car emissions and carbon footprint. If you can't move closer to work, think about moving closer to a public transportation center. Either way, you'll save time by driving less. By taking public transit, you can reclaim the time it takes to commute by bringing a book - some public transit options even have wireless internet on board.

Avoid Driving During Rush Hour
Everyone hates rush hour. Not only are there a lot of cars on the road, but when the freeways are clogged, traffic is moving slow if at all. This means that all those cars are producing emissions that contribute to pollution and greenhouse gases. If you can, alter your work hours so that you can avoid driving during rush hour. You'll save time and increase your car's fuel efficiency.

Take Public Transit
Consider your public transit options as a way to reduce your commute. The more people who use public transit, the more fuel efficient your ride to work. Additionally, many cities are experimenting with clean burning vehicles and buses to get people where they need to go and are adding features like wireless internet to entice commuters to leave their cars at home.

Carpool
If you have to drive to work, see if there is someone else who you could carpool with. Not only are you taking a car off the road, but by sharing the ride, you could also share the responsibility for driving, not to mention the expense at the pump. Some communities even have programs to help commuters looking to carpool find each other.
